Safety evaluation of gums and thickeners used in cosmetic formulations: A Comprehensive Study on Commonly Used Ingredients

Abstract

In an extension to our previous studies on the safety assessment of frequently utilized cosmetic components, we conducted thorough evaluations on a series of gums and thickeners. Drawing upon established French guidelines for ocular tolerance tests 5 and cutaneous irritancy assessments 6, modifications were made as necessary, ensuring comprehensive coverage of existing literature 1-4. For this study, we examined fifty distinct samples sourced from various suppliers across diverse types and grades.

Upon examination, none of the 50 samples displayed any signs of pathologic lesions in the ocular mucous membrane. However, it was observed that silicates, silica, and bentonite caused corneal irritation under high concentration conditions; this may be attributed to a mechanical effect influencing their properties.

When conducting the primary cutaneous irritancy test with gelled volatile hydrocarbon solvents, we noted a moderately irritating reaction, highlighting the need for careful handling in product formulations. Upon further analysis through repeated application testing over six weeks, no significant detrimental effects were observed on skin health. However, slight intolerance was evident when working with gels comprised of volatile hydrocarbons and isopropyl myristate. These findings indicate a notable reduction in irritation compared to previous tests involving pure oils.

Conclusively, the evaluation reveals that the use of gums and thickeners under study poses no hazard to skin integrity or health, providing assurance for their safe inclusion in cosmetic formulations.
